Thanks for this. Found your blog by accident and glad I did. Chabon always has something great to say, and he's right. I am so much happier when I'm writing even though I try to ignore it, procrastinate so that the second draft of the book I'm writing that I really love won't see the light of day when I know it needs to...when I know there are teenagers and adults out there who will laugh and love the story... I often think if I'd grown up in a place that valued and supported the arts it wouldn't be so hard, but maybe it would be. Maybe once we find the groove it gets easier. Congrats to you for writing.

I hate the stereotype that if you are creative, you must also be insane (or an alcoholic, or whatever), so much that I really play down those parts of myself. I did NaNo (though at this point, I'm calling it NaNoWhineMo, as I'm sure everyone I know is sick of my complaining about it) to motivate myself to write every day because like Michael Chabon, I dread it.

I do it anyway.
